Cemex earned five Portland Cement Association Awards, including the 2018 Energy and Environment Award for Land Stewardship, at the association’s Cement and Concrete Fly-In event, held in Washington, D.C., last month.
“Safety and sustainability are two main principles at Cemex, and we strive to honor those principles each day,” said Cemex USA President Ignacio Madridejos. “We are proud of our operations, and this recognition shows how committed we are to operate safely and in an environmentally-responsible manner.”
The Kosmos Cement Plant in Louisville, Ky., received the PCA Energy and Environment Award for Land Stewardship as recognition for outstanding environmental and community relations efforts. In 2017, the facility planted a native seed mix on about an acre of designated habitat land to provide food sources for the Monarch Butterfly. As a result of these efforts, the facility was presented with Gold Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council, signifying the highest level of habitat and species conservation projects.
PCA recognized Cemex’s Clinchfield (Ga.) Cement Plant for its outstanding safety performance with the 2018 PCA Chairman’s Safety Performance Award in the 227,001 to 289,000 Hours category.
The association also presented Cemex with three PCA Safety Innovation Awards: The Miami (Fla.) facility in the Milling/Grinding category for developing a new mill loading process that eliminates the need for employees to stand on top of the mill while improving load rates; the Brooksville (Fla.) Cement Plant in the General Facility category for a program that redesigned the facility’s blower housings to make the filters easily accessible from ground level; and Cemex’s Houston facility in the Pyroprocessing category for creating a program that uses drones for visual inspections of preheater towers, silos and other enclosed areas.
“The American cement industry cares deeply about employee and workplace safety,” said PCA President and CEO Michael Ireland. “The winners demonstrate every day that safety is a primary concern. We are proud of their effort to pursue excellence in safety innovation for their company and their colleagues.”
